One of the popular mediums that uses the Warhammer world is the computer game genre. There have been several Warhammer computer games released – ‘Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat’ (1995), ‘Warhammer: Dark Omen’ (1998), ‘Warhammer: Mark of Chaos’ (2006), and the soon to be released ‘Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.’ All are real-time tactics war games and were incredibly popular both with the general public and Warhammer fans.
‘Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat’ was the first computer game release and was heralded as ushering in a new era of computer gaming. The game relied on the same rules and scenarios set out by previous Warhammer table-top and role playing games – your aim is to move through the Warhammer world, battling with foes by using close combat and magical skills. ‘Warhammer: Dark Omen’ was the sequel to ‘Shadow of the Horned Rat’, and was more popular than it’s predecessor due to the easier nature of the game and the absence of some of the more debilitating bugs which had crippled the first release. ‘Dark Omen’ was a 3D release, and was eventually adapted for Sony Playstation.
The latest release, ‘Warhammer: Mark of Chaos’, follows the same general rules and structures as the previous two Warhammer games, but with obvious improvements to the graphics and workings of the game. More detailed and with far more options for play, ‘Mark of Chaos’ was well received by gaming reviewers. The as yet unreleased ‘Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning’ will be even more daring and technologically advanced in scope. Already receiving rave reviews with testers and gaming communities, it is expected to be one of the best selling games for the 2008-2009 season.
