WARHAMMER FANTASY BATTLE

Warhammer Fantasy Battle (later known as Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles), is a table-top war game which allows players to compete against each other with their army of miniature characters. Played with two or more players (sometimes with the added complexity of alliances, partnerships, or war and peace pacts), the Fantasy Battle is played out in a large board-like environment, usually decorated to reflect the gothic old world surroundings which the official Games Workshop guides describe. Each player, with their army of miniatures, moves their units around the table-top world, engaging in battles with other players.

Games Workshop have released several editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle (the first in 1983, the latest – the seventh – in 2006), with each new version having significant changes that warrant fans upgrading their edition. The basic premise remains the same – the table is generally 6 foot by 4 foot, and the units move around the board by players rolling six-sided die. In an intentional effort to encourage creativity and personality, Games Workshop sell the miniatures unpainted and unassembled, allowing players to come up with their own designs and decorations.

The differences between each edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle are concentrated on the specifications of the units – one version may allocate a health or skill rating of 1-10, whilst another version may increase or decrease this rating. Some versions eliminate characters and introduce new ones. The 1987 ‘Warhammer 40,000’ game was derived from Warhammer Fantasy Battle but was more science-fiction in direction.
